About
Us
Once upon
a time, many years ago, a young man called Elvis drove his pick-up
truck a few blocks from his home and walked into Sun Records to make a
record as a present for his mother, or so he claimed.
Sam Phillips, Sun's owner, remembered him and his voice, and a couple
of months later, called him back for a session. Presley, a complete
unknown, recorded "That's Alright Mama" that evening. An acetate of the
record was played on local radio the very next night, and became a huge
hit. Rock and roll (or at least, one very important strand of it) was
born.
The
music business used to be that simple, but it has long been an
industry, populated by dinosaurs whose out-of -touch ideas (endless
manufactured boy and girl "bands", Pop Idol re-treads, and the
perennial "Coldplay were successful, let's find another Coldplay"
theory of A and R) will reduce popular contemporary music to bland,
inoffensive, unchallenging corporate entertainment fodder, unless we
stop them. How many of the great bands of the past would have made it
if they'd have had to get Simon Cowell's approval?
So,
what's the alternative?
Welcome
to
NgaRo.
First,
the name - "NgaRo" is a Tibetan word that means, "a harmonious voice",
or "a roar". The name is appropriate, because NgaRo exists to give a
voice to talented musicians of all styles, people who deserve to be
heard, but who, for whatever reason, won't be going the Pop Idol route.
We also believe that the roar emanating from NgaRo, as part of the
internet legal music downloading movement, will be instrumental in
bringing about the overdue demise of the jurassic record companies.
NgaRo is all about legal downloading - it is the only way to access our
artists' work. We are cutting out the middlemen and the parasites.
NgaRo is not a limited company with high-paid executives, offices in
Wardour St, massive overheads and shareholders who have to see big
profits - NgaRo is a co-operative of musicians who want to make a
change to the way music is made available. We are putting the musicians
and their audience in as near direct contact as possible. We are giving
musicians, as unknown as Elvis Presley was when he entered Sun Records,
the possibility of a global audience, and we are giving music-lovers
the world over the chance to hear fresh genuine talent. Both musicians
and fans are getting a better deal, with no managers, labels, record
shops etc, taking a cut. NgaRo is not a dance-related label, or a pop
label, or a rock label - all forms of music can exist here, creating a
harmonious voice. Please take the opportunity to listen to something a
little different from what you normally hear. To make things more
accessible, our catalogue is sub-divided into labels and albums, but
you will, of course, pick out and download individual tracks that
interest you.
We
simply do not believe that legal downloading will destroy music, though
it may destroy conventional record companies - we believe that the
internet will create many more avenues and opportunities for musicians
to get in contact with their audiences. Freed from the blinkered,
idiotic non-vision of record companies who disbanded their A and R
departments long ago, a thousand flowers will bloom. The freedom that
the musicians will have, coupled with the direct contact they will have
with their audience (via e-mail, for example) will re-invigorate music,
and give it back a freshness and directness that a has often been
missing in the years since Elvis Presley walked into Sun
Records.
